Yes, you can access some contraception without a GP referral, including emergency contraception and certain pill resupplies from participating pharmacies, but many long-acting or new prescriptions still require a consultation with a trained provider including GPs or our expert clinicians at MSI Australia.
Contraception You Can Get Without a GP Referral
1. Emergency Contraception (EC)
You can walk into most pharmacies and request emergency contraception without a prescription, regardless of age. Pharmacists will ask questions to check timing, symptoms and safety, but they can’t ask anything about your relationships, religion, or parents.
2. Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP) Resupply
Many states now allow trained pharmacists to provide resupply (not first-time prescriptions) of certain low-risk pills. Typical requirements (vary by state):
- Aged roughly 16–50
- Have been taking the same pill continuously for 1–2 years
- Have had a GP or clinician review in the past 1–2 years
This service is designed to help with quick, walk-in birth control access when your usual script runs out.
Contraception That Does Require a Clinician
Long-acting reversible contraception (IUDs, the implant), first-time OCP prescriptions, and permanent methods all require a consultation and, in some cases, a procedure.
