What Should I Expect After a Medical Abortion?

1 May, 2026 | Blog, Contraception, Short form Q&A

After a medical abortion, you can expect bleeding and cramping that is usually heavier than a normal period, and you may pass blood clots. The bleeding should start to get lighter after the pregnancy has passed, but it is common to have moderate bleeding for around two weeks, with light bleeding possibly continuing until your next period. You may also experience temporary side effects from the medications, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever or chills.

Medical Abortion Recovery Timeline

Medical abortion involves taking two doses of medication. After the second dose at home, most people start bleeding and cramping within hours, often within 4–6 hours. This is the period when the pregnancy is usually expelled, and you may experience intense cramping and bleeding with clots.

You may need to rest at home for the day and possibly the following day, depending on how you feel. Bleeding often continues, gradually reducing over the next one to two weeks, and some light bleeding may persist until your next period.

What’s Normal After a Medical Abortion?

It’s normal to bleed more than a typical menstrual period and to pass clots. Cramps can range from mild to strong, but generally lessen after the pregnancy has passed. Over-the-counter pain relief and home comfort measures can help manage discomfort. Your doctor may also prescribe stronger pain medication if needed. Emotional responses vary. Some people feel relief, others feel mixed emotions. Each person’s experience is different, and rest, hydration, and listening to your body are important during abortion recovery.
