I’m voting Yes for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament

27 Sep, 2023 | Advocacy, Media

I firmly believe that voting Yes to embrace a Voice to Parliament in the referendum on 14 October 2023 will lead to a more inclusive, equitable, and healthy Australia for all.

The words to be included in the Constitution are quite simple and do four simple things:

Provide Recognition – “In recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia:”

Ensure there will a body called the Voice There shall be a body, to be called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice”.

Allow the Voice to make representations on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples – “The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice may make representations to the Parliament and the Executive Government of the Commonwealth on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples”.

Ensure the Parliament has the power to determine how the Voice works – “The Parliament shall, subject to this Constitution, have power to make laws with respect to matters relating to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice, including its composition, functions, powers and procedures.”

I’ve worked in the charitable sector for over 20 years and throughout this time I have been dedicated to helping give a voice to people and communities about their health. I have seen the transformative impact that community perspectives make to decision-making.

Giving a voice to people means we listen – we genuinely hear and acknowledge people and communities and their views on matters that impact them. This leads to happier and healthier people and communities.

I will be proud to vote Yes to recognise the world’s oldest continuing culture as the First People of Australia, and give them a Voice.
